Joint “A” walk with the Cork Backpackers Club

Today’s “A” walk was made extra special as we hosted our neighbouring club, the Cork Backpackers.
Co‐led by John Lonergan of the Galtee Walking Club and Fiona Shanahan, who is a member of both clubs, the group of 29 took off from Cush car park under a hovering drone driven by Eoin Lonergan.

The clear day, with light winds, meant all the peaks were on display. While the Galtee mountains were very busy with numerous local clubs and students from Limerick, we headed for a rarely trodden location in the western Galtees. We ascended towards the locally known “Grassy Knoll” before enduring several kilometers of traversing ‐ good training apparently! We crossing over a few gullies on our way to the beautiful Assaroula falls, which cascades gracefully down several 100m of mountain. A great place for lunch before taking on the ascent to Lyracappul.

It was plain sailing after that as we followed the Galtee famine wall before turning left and descending by the Stoney Man!
Thanks so much to John and Fiona for leading, to Martina for sweeping, Eoin for droning, all our visitors from the Cork Backpackers, and lastly Aileen for keeping up the Galtee Bake Off tradition with her delicious biscuit cake.
