This year will mark the 20th anniversary of the event and it will no doubt be an historic occasion.
Galtee Challenge 2024 – June 29th
The Galtee Challenge will be held on Saturday June 29th. This year, in addition to the self-navigated full Galtee Challenge from Cahir to Anglesborough, we are offering the option of a shorter route from the Black Road to Anglesborough either self navigated or as part of a guided group.
Participants will receive a certificate, gift and a hot meal in the hall in Anglesborough afterwards.
Full Galtee Challenge: 31 km 1700 m ascent (self-navigated)
Shorter Galtee Challenge: 18 km 1200 m ascent (self navigated or guided)
Information and Rules:
- Participants must be over 18 years of age. Participants between the ages of 12 and 18 will be considered if they are accompanied at all times by an adult who is an experienced hill-walker. Under 12s are not allowed.
- Participants must have the necessary hill walking experience and be in a fit physical condition.
- Participants who will self-navigate must carry OSI map 74 (or the East West Mapping map or equivalent) or be comfortable using a GPS or hiking app. Note that the names of some of the peaks differ between maps, with East West Mapping using names that are used locally.
- Participants must have wind and waterproof clothing and suitable hiking footwear. Runners/trainers are not allowed.
- The designated route(s) must be followed.
- All participants are required to sign in at the start and end of the walk. If you leave the walk early, you are required to phone one of the numbers on your event wrist band.
- In the event of an accident, please phone one of the contact numbers on your event wrist band.
- The latest time for receiving a meal in the hall in Anglesborough is 6pm.
- Dogs are not allowed.
- Participants are requested to leave no trace.
- The Galtee Walking Club is not responsible for any mishap, injury or damage regardless of the cause.
Full Challenge: The self navigating Galtee Challenge is a 31 km traverse of the entire Galtee Mountain range, taking in all major peaks with a total height gain of 1700 metres approx. and a maximum altitude of 919 metres. It is advisable that participants should have completed other long distance walks with at least 1,500m ascent or more. This is a Challenge Walk for the experienced walker with a high level of fitness. In addition to the physical challenge, it is a test of navigation skills especially in poor weather conditions. The direction is east to west, starting in Cahir, then to Farbreaga, Greenane, Galtybeg, Galtymore, Slievecushnabinna, Carrignabinnia, Lyracappul and Temple Hill with the finish at Anglesboro.
The Challenge is self navigating with points as shown on this route card. It is highly recommended that all participants have at least 2 litres of water, sufficient food for the day and appropriate clothing and boots. If a walker is unable to complete the course he/she must contact the phone number on the route card / wrist band. Everyone who completes the Challenge will receive a certificate.
Shorter Challenge: The shorter challenge can be self navigated or be done as part of a led group. The route involves an 18 km hike from the Black Road to Anglesborough, taking in most major peaks with a total height gain of 1200 metres approx. and a maximum altitude of 919 metres. It is advisable that participants should have completed other long distance walks with at least 900m ascent or more. This is a Challenge Walk for the experienced walker with a high level of fitness. The route stretches from the Black Road to Galtymore, Slievecushnabinna, Carrignabinnia, Lyracappul and Temple Hill with the finish at Anglesboro. A route cards is available here for those who wish to self-navigate. It is highly recommended that all participants have at least 2 litres of water, sufficient food for the day and appropriate clothing and boots. If a walker is self-navigating and is unable to complete the course he/she must contact the phone number on the route card / wrist band. Everyone who completes the Challenge will receive a certificate.
